The American Chestnut Story
In the 1800’s the American Chestnut tree was
considered to be the most important tree growing in the
eastern part of America. One out of four trees was a Chestnut
tree. Its wood was used for everything from fence rails to fine
furniture. The tasty nuts were an important food for wild and
domestic animals as well as the American settlers.
In 1904, a blight infecting American Chestnut trees was
first noticed in New York. It was traced to an accidentally
imported fungus. The fungus spread at the rate of about fifty
miles a year. By the 1930’s, most American Chestnut trees
were dead! Worms moved into the dead standing trees to eat
the moist wood. This created a unique pattern of worm
passages - thus “wormy chestnut”. An estimated 4 billion
trees were standing dead. Some of this wood was harvested,
but because of the worm holes, it was used for general
purposes such as barn building. Now, because it is extinct,
American Chestnut wood has become even more valuable.
Efforts are being made to re-establish the American
Chestnut tree. At very best it will be many years before any
new American Chestnut wood will be available. More
information on the American Chestnut tree can be found on
the web site of the American Chestnut Foundation.
The value of American Chestnut lumber continues to
increase because the supply is so limited. I have reclaimed a
supply of American Chestnut from old structures. While my
American Chestnut wood supply lasts, I am making various
items from yo-yo’s to neckties to wall shelves. I chose to do
this so that folks would have the opportunity to acquire useful
items at an affordable price from this extinct wood.
This is your opportunity to own a piece of American
history!
